The Role of the Physical Environment in the Hospital of the 21st Century

Ulrich states that providing patients with access to nature, indoor and outdoor gardens, views of nature through windows and artwork of nature scenes, can relieve stress and can lessen pain medication. They have shown that families are soothed and staff performs better. Ulrich suggests the following characteristics when selecting nature scenes for patients:
- depict verdant vegetation and colorful flowers as they convey a sense of safety,
- landscapes with positive cultural artifacts such as barns or curved gardens portray openness,
- blue skies, scenes of water, sunny, warm inviting weather relaxes and inspires,
- images with a true sense of clarity and depth counter the sense of claustrophobia,
- avoid surreal qualities or abstract art which tend to confuse the patient causing anxiety, and
- avoid optically unstable forms or images that appear to move as too much stimulation agitates.
